SPOOL (Simultaneous Peripheral Operation On-line)

It is a free space of secondary memory managed by OS for the communication with peripheral devices like printer. It is required because of the difference in the operating speed of the CPU and peripheral devices. Peripheral devices are slow in their operation. The process of using SPOOL is known as spooling.
