1. a) “Knowledge of Civil Engineering Material is always beneficial in civil engineering construction for civil engineers.” Use specific reasons and example to support the above statement. [5]
b) Draw the typical stress-strain diagram for mild steel showing all the salient features. [5]
c) What do you know about brittle fracture of metals? [5]
2. a) Explain the methods adopted to control the corrosion of metals. [7]
b) Alloys are used as structural material. Justify with reasons. [4]
c) A mild steel bar of diameter 16mm and length 200mm is applied to both ends with a force of 100KN in tensile test machine. Determine the change in diameter of the bar if modulus of elasticity of mild steel is 2 × 105 N/mm2 and poison’s ratio is 0.3 [4]

b) How mild steel is different from wrought iron? Explain operation involved in manufacture of wrought iron from pig iron? [7]
4. a) What are the reactions of hydration of the main compounds in the Portland cement? [7]
b) List out and descinge the different types of defects in timber with suitable figures. [8]
5. a) Describe workability of fresh concrete? Explain one of the methods for measuring workability of cement concrete. [7]
b) Describe the process of manufacturing clay tiles. What are the different types of tiles used in building? [8]
6. a) Explain about ACI concrete mix design method. [7]
b) What are the importance of admixture. Plastic is used in building construction. Justify with reasons. [8]
